I made a decision many years ago to be an ‘ever growing person.‘ After leaving Bible college I realised that there was only going to be one person who would be able to grow me as a leader and that was – ME! So I made a decision back then to invest in myself which mean’t attending conferences, listening to podcasts and also reading lots of books! I’ve listed some of the most influential below.
People often say ‘I don’t have time to read a book.’ Can I encourage you to make a it a daily habit. Simply schedule in a chapter a day and you will be amazed at what you achieve. Second, when you find a book that impacts you, encourage your staff, team or volunteers to read it too and have a meeting to discuss its contents and how you can use them to improve what you’re doing.

This book of all the Maxwell books made the biggest immediate difference to me at an important time in the early days of my pastoral ministry. It’s amazing the difference it makes to our relationships once we understand what people are looking for. I tell my leaders ‘just be nice to people and take a genuine interest in their lives and you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make!’
Steve Tibbert is an English Pastor who has led his church through great growth. This book is absolutely packed with honesty, wisdom and lessons learned along the way. Brilliant! I’ve read it over and over again and scribbled all over it. All our leaders at Elim have now read it. Superb!
This has been another major influence on us in the past year. Scott documents a simple strategy to grow your leaders and encourage them to develop and release potential leaders. This is so crucial. The church or your business cannot grow without you constantly producing new leaders. You may be limited right now by this. Great book!
This book has become a classic. Every church leader should read it. Most of my guys have. It will really make you think through how you do church through the eyes of unchurched people. Very helpful!
Andy Stanley, has for some time, encouraged us to think outside the box and this book helps us to lead this generation well. A stimulating and challenging read. Loved it!
Any book by Bill Hybels will contain quality leadership wisdom and this does not disappoint. There is so much packed into this book.
This great book is full of leadership proverbs. Love this book as it’s an easy read, packed with wisdom and experience.
What can I say about this? Packed full of leadership secrets from the man himself! Should be on every bookshelf!
I also enjoy reading secular leadership books and autobiographies. You can glean useful leadership tips and be inspired at the same time!
If you haven’t read ‘Good to Great’ by now – it’s a must read!
Duncan’s story from rags to riches is honest, pithy and inspirational!
There are so many great books out there. Leaders are readers! What are you reading to grow yourself as a leader?
